Now, don't get me wrong, a fresh bagel from Manhattan Bagel smothered in Philadelphia Cream Cheese is jaw-dropping. It also takes me back to when I was younger and would ONLY eat a Poppyseed bagel with cream cheese. Most likely, a lot of people still do this which is totally understandable but I am here to give you bagel topping ideas that go way beyond cream cheese anytime you want to expand your horizons! Along with the toppings below, I suggested bagel flavors that pair well with particular toppings, but feel free to mix and match bagel flavors with different toppings!
1. Lox Bagel...
My ALL-TIME favorite bagel! With cream cheese, lox, tomato, onion slices, cucumber slices, capers, and fresh dill, what is not to love?! However, you don't need to limit yourself to just those well-known toppings for a lox bagel. You can add...
- Avocado
- Radishes
- Eggs
- Chickpeas
- Parsely, Cilantro, Rosemary, etc.
- Various types of cream cheese such as Smoked Salmon Cream Cheese, Garden Vegetables Cream Cheese, Garlic & Herd Cream Cheese, etc.
- Lox is cured salmon, whereas smoked salmon is cured or brined, then smoked
- Both types of salmon are thin, smooth slices, and delicious on bagels, so whatever your preference is, go for it!
Personally, I enjoy Lox on a Honey Whole Wheat, Pumpernickel, Everything, Multigrain, Sesame, Poppy, or an Onion Bagel.
2. Egg & Avocado Bagel...
This iconic pair works so well together due to the creaminess from the avocado combining with the velvety yolk. On top of my egg, I sprinkle pepper, paprika, and parsley on top. For this bagel, I like to cook my egg sunny side up or soft boiled. Click here to read a step-by-step guide on how to cook a sunny side up egg and click here for instructions and tips for making the perfect soft boiled egg.
I either toast a Honey Whole Wheat, Pumpernickel, Everything, Multigrain, Poppy, Onion, Egg, Sesame, Garlic, Cheddar, or an Asiago Bagel. Now, I spread half of an avocado on my warm toasted bagel, add my choice of cooked egg on top, and place sliced baby grape tomatoes on the egg (optional). How easy is that?
3. Avocado Bagel...
This is basic avocado toast elevated to the next level. On a Honey Whole Wheat, Pumpernickel, Everything, Multigrain, Poppy, or a Sesame Bagel smear your choice of cream cheese (optional), then slice or spread half of an avocado on your bagel. Top with pepper and sliced grape tomatoes.
4. Canadian Bacon, Cheddar Cheese, and Egg Bagel...
The ingredient that ties everything together into one warm, flavorful, ooey-gooey bite after bite is of course... CHEESE! On top of either a Honey Whole Wheat, Pumpernickel, Everything, Multigrain, Poppy, Egg, Sesame, Garlic, or a Cheddar Bagel slather on your choice of cream cheese, followed by Canadian Bacon, Cheddar Cheese, and then an egg. You may also...
- Use Smoked Bacon, Turkey Bacon, Slab Bacon, Pancetta, etc...
- Use American Cheese, Swiss Cheese, Provolone Cheese, Mozzarella, etc...
5. Egg Salad Bagel...
Let's talk egg salad. It is one of the most misinterpreted foods due to its name but it is also one of the most rich-tasting foods. Also, Egg Salad requires only a couple basic ingredients: hard-boiled eggs, mayonnaise, yellow mustard, salt, and pepper.
- Your first step toward making Egg Salad is to boil your eggs. How many eggs you will use depends on your personal preference (I usually boil 2). Click here for a guide on how to hard-boil an egg.
- Once your eggs are cooled, mash your eggs
- Add in mustard and mayo, beginning with about a teaspoon adding more regarding your taste preference
- Sprinkle in your salt and pepper and mix all ingredients together until well combined
6. Tuna Salad Bagel...
Ever since I was little, my FAVORITE type of sandwich was a Tuna Salad sandwich, but having a childhood favorite on a bagel makes this nostalgic sandwich 100 times tastier. Like Egg Salad, Tuna Salad is soooo simple. All you need is canned or fresh tuna, mayonnaise, salt, pepper, chopped celery (optional), and chopped onion (optional). Just add all of these ingredients together, mix thoroughly, and sandwich it between two halves of a Honey Whole Wheat, Pumpernickel, Everything, Multigrain, Sesame, or Poppy Bagel.
7. Nutella, Strawberry, and Nut Bagel...
Who doesn't love a bagel you can label as "healthy" just because it has a few nutritious ingredients on it? I know I do! On either a Plain or Chocolate Chip Bagel spread lots of Nutella, chopped strawberries, and Rolled-oats or some type of nut on top. Enjoy, all of you Nutella lovers!
8. Peanut Butter, Banana, and Nut Bagel...
Heres another bagel that will please your sweet tooth but also nourish your body at the same time! Smear your peanut butter, banana slices, and your choice of nuts or oats on a warm toasted Chocolate Chip or Plain Bagel.
9. Cream Cheese, Apple, Honey, and Cinnamon Bagel...
This tastes like Fall in every bite. These sweet toppings match perfectly with a Cinnamon Raisin Bagel, but if you have another bagel flavor in mind, go for it! Assemble your bagel starting with cream cheese, thinly sliced apple, a generous drizzle of honey, and a sprinkle of ground cinnamon to tie everything together. Yummy!
